Book Review – The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Book Review Review: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Okay, so I was definitely one of those people who put this book on hold over the summer and was counting down the days till it came out. I ran to local book store that morning and savored the new Dan Brown in my hands. I was unbelievably excited.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Dan Brown isn’t my favorite author. I don’t even think he’s that talented of a writer. But, that man can tell a story. His books are probably not going to be passed down from generation to generation as profound pieces of literature, but they are just super excited reads. Once you get past page 100 of the Lost Symbol, you might as well resign all hopes of getting any sleep because you will stay up until you’ve turned the last page.
So, in order to do a review of this book without including any spoilers, I have to stray on the side of generalities instead of specifics. In general, I think it was completely worth the $23.00 I paid for the hard cover. The story follows a similar pattern to his others. Robert Langdon, Harvard symbologist, is dragged into a world of chaos and mystery, and of course, completely surprised. He takes you on an adventure through the depths of Washington D.C, which makes this specific story fun to witness.
My pros for the book are: it is suspenseful as ever in true Dan Brown style; it completely explores the dark secrets of D.C. and the freemasons; and there are twists I can guarantee you will never be able to guess. My cons are a little harder to list. Because Brown writes in a very image-based way, his novel seems more like a screenplay and a less like a book. Literally, you can almost imagine the camera angles being shot for certain scenes. Although this can be fun at times, it gets a little irritating because you find yourself focusing more on description and less on plot. Furthermore, it’s hardtop work up 400 pages of amazing twists and turns, and end it in a completely satisfying way. When a story hits such a crescendo in plot, it’s hard to end it in a way that pleases everyone. My word of caution is not to expect anything halfway through the story.
Otherwise, I thought it was fun while it lasted. I definitely recommend reading it; it is really worth the money. ! Enjoy!
