As I noticed more and more gray sneaking into my hair (must be the kids, I think…) I realize that as a mom, especially one that works at home, I could be taking better care of myself. Sure, most of the time, no one sees me, but when I do go out – I never know who I’m going to meet – a new customer, a potential business partner or that special someone who might want to land me on Oprah – and it couldn’t hurt to look my best, right. But I am strictly low maintenance and not into following trends (unless it’s a tween trend…) so I turned to a true beauty (inner and outer) expert to give me some advice – and here’s what she had to say….

By Alison Craig of Three Impressions

We all want to look fabulous. Who wouldn’t? But in today’s day and age, what is in style seems to change every 15 seconds. Oh look, there goes another trend. So how is one to know how to look great no matter what your age?
And how do you avoid that dreadful moment 10, 15, or 20 years from now when you look at the photos and wonder, “Why did I ever wear that? Why did I style my hair like that? Why did I do my makeup like that?”
Well, it is actually quite easy. Stop looking at the trends of what is considered beautiful for 15 seconds, and look at the classics that have been beautiful for ages. Here are two very simple and consistent principles used throughout the ages to create that look of timeless beauty.
1)	Create contrast. Visual contrast has always been key to being a classic beauty. Fair skin and rich hair is an example of natural contrast. But contrast doesn’t just have to be between you hair and skin color. You can also create contrast between your skin color and clothes and between several articles of clothing. Why is contrast so important? Contrast creates visual interest and make colors pop. Think about the color wheel: opposites attract.
As we age, we want tone down the contrast. In your 20s, you can go pretty crazy with color contrast. So if you want to create a bold fashion look, use contrasting color. It is the easiest, most inexpensive way to create a dynamic look as well. As we age into our 40s and 50s, and beyond, begin to tone down the contrast. So if you are a fair skinned and blonde, try a gray suit instead of black. The harsh black can begin to exaggerate the visual signs of age, such as wrinkles. So don’t go to extremes that can age us and startle others.
2)	Be true to yourself. I know it sounds quite simple, but it always amazes me how many dress for who they think other people think they are. If your look and image don’t reflect your true authentic self, then you will always make those “Why did I do that?” mistakes. You’ll feel embarrassed later if you aren’t authentic in this current moment. Why is that so important? People can tell if there is something amiss, so if you are dressing to please someone else other than yourself, it won’t work. So be original, and be timeless.
By creating timeless looks that reflect who you are, you and your look will never be out of style.

I think the big question as the first day of school approaches is “what to do with this hair?” Tween girls are taking hair dying trends in from everywhere, especially when their favorite celebrity shows up on “Entertainment Tonight” sporting a new hair color every other day. So the question for moms becomes, “At what age should hair dying be allowed?”
The problem really comes in with bleach. Coming from a person who did get bored with her hair and dye it too often, bleach can really be the devil. I have dark hair, and when you bleach a full set of highlights for example, it can really cause problems for later in life. I had no issues when I first did it, but eventually my hair did dry out. Maybe more subtle color before the point of bleaching it is okay starting in the early teens, but the longer you wait the better. Dyes have never proven to be good for hair, especially in the long run. Now, they make temporary dyes that last a few weeks with everything from natural colors to crazy colors, so suggest that for your tween! I found some at my local beauty supply store for under $15, so be sure to check there first.

The books focuses on helping parents cope with modern-day issues surrounding raising a child. In today’s times, parents have a million things to worries about with everything from dealing with money to technology to Halloween costumes. This book covers a lot of bases, as it comes from parental counseling experts.
For instance, on Job Loss and Money Problems, the authors’ tips are: “Tell the truth. Tell your kids that there won’t be as many presents this holiday season. Tell them that your family budget is really strained right now. When framed in a positive way this is an opportunity to teach your children how to save money and spend wisely. Have your child make gifts, teach your children how to shop clearance aisles first, go to second-hand or dollar stores, do product comparisons, shop from a list to avoid impulse buys and use coupon sites.”

After mentioning the Halloween costume subject, I’m sure you’re curious about what they had to say on that. The authors mention that “Children need reliable, accurate information from trusted adults to handle the messages about sexuality they receive on a daily basis from media sources and peers. For parents with young girls, especially, Halloween can mean going through racks of costumes with short skirts, bare midriffs, and laced up heels. Use these teachable moments to discuss your values and limits around costumes. Teach your values, and give your children reliable, accurate information about the many ways sexuality messages enter their lives.”

The authors touch on things like keeping kids healthy in school, addressing the swine flu, and even how to limit TV and cell phone exposure to increase attention and success at school. The book costs $12.95 and can be bought online or in book stores nationwide. You’ve already tackled the notifications. What’s next? More Settings! I know it may not be very exciting, but these components are important to establish when you first get a profile so that way you don’t have to worry about it later. You’ll be happy you did this now.
Let’s start. After you sign in, you go to Facebook Home (automatically). That’s the homepage. We’ll get to the details of that page later. First, let’s get some other stuff out of the way.
Click on the “Settings” tab in the upper right hand corner. The first page you see has your personal information like name, e-mail, password, etc. Make sure these are correct. Then, click on the Security Question option about half-way down the page. I suggest having one, just for security purposes. If you don’t want one, no big deal! Just skip that part. If you do, add a security question like “What is your first pet’s name?” and the answer and hit “Change Security Question”.
Next, go to “Privacy”. Hit the “manage” button in blue on the right side of it. This is where you can control what people see in your profile. Click on the first link, which is “Profile”. I highly suggest changing everything but BASIC INFO to the only “Only Friends” option in the slide down menu. This means that only people you agree to be friends with can see all of your profile. After you’re done, go back to the previous screen (use the back button on your browser). Go to the next option, which is “Search”. Here, you can change your “search visibility” if you want to. I suggest keeping it to everyone, because that is how people find you in the first place. If you want to be searchable but more private, just uncheck the options below, which include what people can see when they search you.
Go back again. You can click on the next link, which is “News Feed and Wall”. This option allows you to control what actions of yours appear on other people’s news feeds, which is the updating list of actions on your Home. I would recommend keeping it all checked, simply because that’s the point of Facebook! You want to know what your friends and family are up to, and they want to know about you. You always have the option of changing it, and I wanted to know where it was in case you do. You don’t have to worry about the 4th option, which is “Applications”, simply because you haven’t gotten any yet. We’ll get there soon! I hope this was helpful. Here’s a brief recap:
1.	Once signed in, go the Settings tab in the upper right-hand corner.
2.	Make sure all your information is correct.
3.	Add a Security Question if you feel it’s necessary.
4.	Then, click on “manage” next to the Privacy option.
5.	Go through the top 3 options, which are Profile, Search, and News Feed and Wall. These options will allow you to control who sees your profile, what info they see, who can search you, and who sees what actions you do. They are important things to establish on a social networking site!
If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment for me!

After the success of her first novel, she wrote a second named Comfort Food. This novel focuses around a middle-aged TV star who cooks her way into people’s homes.
Gus Simpson, or Augusta Simpson, is the star of Cooking with Gusto!, her very own TV show. She turning the big 5-0, and is nervous to the hilt. She has two daughters, a new co-host, and a channel that comes with a lot of drama. She loves throwing birthday parties, but this is one she really tries to ignore.
Carmen Vega, the sexy, young, newcomer to the cooking channel is taking over Gus’s spotlight, as well as becoming a serious irritation. She is the former Miss Spain, and the network’s attempt to boost Gus’s ratings. But, she seems to be more trouble than help. On top of that, her daughters are feuding, and her long-time friend producer is not taking her side. Comfort Food is all about Gus coming into her new age with Gusto, so to speak. She learns how to deal with her adult daughters, and her new, vicious TV show set-up, and a very charming culinary producer. I felt comfort with reading this novel, and couldn’t wait to get to the last page. It’s a wonderful story about a woman who keeps growing up, and lets you grow with her. To purchase this novel, click here.

As a parent of a tween, you might have noticed that she is becoming more and more involved with her friends. Bonding with a peer group is an important part of your tween’s development. You may have noticed that as you daughter enters her tween years she begins spending much more time and energy on her friendships—from hours spent chatting on the internet to sleepover parties spent doing anything but sleeping. While your daughter is definitely getting many positives out of her relationships with peers, chances are these friendships are not always drama-free.

From cliques, to Queen Bees, to shared crushes, there’s no lack of opportunities for friendships to bring your daughter angst. As a parent, how do you help your tween cope with the trials of these relationships? Here are 3 tips to help you help your daughter navigate the bumps and curves along the road of friendship.

Open the Dialogue
In a non-judgmental way, ask you daughter about her friends. Ask her which friend is easiest to talk to, which friend is the best listener, which friend does she have the most fun with, which friend tends to make her upset? By asking your daughter about her friends you are showing her that you care about these relationships. These conversations open the dialogue between the two of you about friendship. If your daughter knows that you are interested in her friendships, she will willingly come to you for advice and solace when she has friend drama.

Be a Listener, Not a Lecturer
It’s tempting to confront your daughter’s friend issues by offering “friendship rules of thumb” (like, always put girl friends before guys or stay away from cliques). Unfortunately, your well-meaning advice may come off as lecturing or judging, which could turn your tween off coming to you at all. Try to spend most of these discussions with your daughter listening, and help her come to wise conclusions on her own by asking her questions. For example, if your daughter discusses feeling left out of a group you might ask her, “How has your situation made you feel about cliques?” This will help her develop the skills she needs to navigate friendships on her own, while still appreciating your advice and care.

Share Stories from Your Tween Years
While many things have changed since you were a tween, the ins and outs of young friendships have not. A great way to help your daughter navigate friend issues is to share friend stories from your own tween years and discuss how you dealt (or did not deal) with these situations. Tell her about a time you had a very jealous friend, a friend others looked at as “uncool,” or a friend you competed with because you had a crush on the same person. Ask you daughter what she would do in these situations or tell her what you did and ask her what she thinks. By doing this, you are helping your daughter create a tool box of skills she may need to deal with her own friend issues in addition to strengthening your own mother-daughter relationship.

We’ll tell our children to be quiet, we shush them, we ask them to stop bouncing around. While it might seem we are teaching her how to behave, are we really drumming in the message that she’s not good enough, that she’ll never do anything right? Will this lead to her constantly striving to do better and make choices that are just trying to please other people? Parenting expert Jan Denise thinks our natural tendencies as parents sometimes send the the message to our kids that they just aren’t good enough, when in fact we know they’re great. Luckily she has some tips on how we can stop this negative conditioning and reinforce the positive message that are kids are great just the way they are.
1. Be there for her – Let your child have her true feelings, from sadness to fear to disappoint and show that you will be there with her no matter what – that you aren’t judging her for those feelings.
2. Help her deal with rejection - we all receive offhand criticism that can seriously wound us. Teach your child that someone else’s criticism is just one person’s opinion and that those words are not the truth, and she’s fine just the way she is. Pointing out something she is good at or an attribute she is proud of will help remind her that we are all the sum of our parts
3. Teach her not to worry about what other people think - as girls hit the tween years, they spend more time with their peer group and can be quite influenced by them. Whether its taking an interest in clothes and makeup because that’s what everyone does when she would rather be playing soccer, or playing dumb because no one likes smart girls, teach her that she’ll never be happy following the crowd around.
4. Encourage her individuality – Does what your child wear embarrass you rather than her? Think about your reaction and allow her to explore her individuality (as long as she’s safe).
5. Show her unconditional love – from the repeated I love yous, the passing touch on the shoulder let your daughter know that you love her no matter what and she will grow into a healthy confident adult.

Back to school is here or just around the corner, so what can you do as a parent to ensure that your tween gets off to a good start? Here are tips to help you get your tween ready for back to school.
Academics: For your younger tween, she has already mastered the basics of reading and math and now it’s time to prime her for her future academic success.

Read to Her – reinforce your tween’s reading skills continuing to read aloud to her. This way you can reinforce the value of reading and provide opportunities for discussing what you both read. To help with writing and comprehension, try reading together and taking notes separately and then comparing your responses.

Make Math an Everyday Affair - this is the age when girls especially seem to lose their interest in math. Don’t let that happen to your daughter. Turn math into an everyday affair by calculating the total in the grocery cart before checkout or asking for her help when measuring for a home improvement project.

Responsibility - Tweens can handle more responsibility and need to learn how to do so. If you encourage her to be more responsible at home, it’s likely she’ll be more responsible at school too. Help her learn how to organize her homework and her backpack for the next day. Put a checklist up next to the door to help her remember everything easily.

Social Pressures
Yes, this is the age when social and peer pressures really begin to take their toll. Tweens are at the right stage to start to gravitate towards friends and it’s an important part of their development of r them to do so. But tweens can be mean, as they all try to find their place in the social landscape. You may find your daughter worrying more about what her friends think than about school. What can you do to help your tween navigate the social pressures?

Choices - As tweens spend more time away from parents, they are faced with making more choices on their own – from who to spend time with to how that time is spent. Older tweens might start encountering situations as serious as being asked to take a drink or a drug, or it may be something less serious like blowing off homework to hang out. Make sure you discuss the possible situations before hand and help her plan a response. It can make the difference between a poor choice and a better one.

Encourage friendships and new activities - In middle school kids get to explore more clubs and activities which can be a wonderful experience for them. However, shyness or fear of not knowing anyone may inhibit them from joining something. Check out the activities available on the school website and see if she has a friend who will join with. Having a ready set club buddy will make those activities all the more appealing.

By following the simple parenting advice, you and your tween can have a virtually stress free back to school period. And you can breathe easy. knowing your child is well prepared for a successful school year.

Self Esteem-5 Tips to Help Your Daughter Raise Hers to the Roof!

Self-esteem, put simply, is the way that you feel about yourself. Unfortunately, many girls suffer from low self esteem because of the messages they get about how they should look and how they should act. Images from the media, like actors, singers—even dolls—make girls think that in order to be noticed and worthwhile, they must be very thin, wear very expensive clothes, and be more focused on boys than books, on shopping than sports.

Why do we need to raise it?

It is no wonder that girls’ self-esteem plummets when they feel like the incredible things they do accomplish—an 100% on a math test or a soccer team’s perfect record—matter much less than things that are impossible to achieve—looking just like an airbrushed supermodel or getting attention from all the boys. In order to help your daughter raise her self esteem, you must help her value the achievements that show off her intelligence, bravery, and generosity as opposed to her looks, popularity, and size of her piggy bank.

5 Tips To Help You Raise Your Daughter’s Self Esteem

1.	Help her process and analyze the media

When you watch TV with your daughter ask her what she thinks of the images of girls and women. Help her understand the harmful stereotypes that some of these images promote. You might say, “This TV show is fun to watch, but it might make someone think that all teen girls have endless allowances to buy trendy clothes. What other untrue things do you think this show might make people think about girls your age?”

2.	Encourage her to read books about successful girls and women

Providing role models other than supermodels is a great way to help your daughter raise her self-esteem. Books that you may have read when you were young, like Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables as well as newer books like the Anastasia Krupnik series by Lois Lowry and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Anne Brashares have relatable young heroines who will encourage your daughter to dream big, speak up, and have confidence in herself.

3.	Encourage her to appreciate her body for its power and strength, not just the way it looks

Calorie counting, diet crazes, and weight obsession do not help the self-esteem of young girls with changing bodies. Combat the idea that body weight equals self worth by helping your daughter appreciate the incredible things she can do with her strong body. Encourage her to join a sports team, become an avid biker, or just run around outside with friends.

4.	Help her pursue a unique passion

Whether it be computer programming, drama, or cooking, your daughter has unique interests and talents that she may need a little push to pursue. Let your daughter know that being unique is great, and encourage her to pursue those interests that will help her feel accomplished and self-confident. Help her set goals when she begins pursuing a passion, because she will gain self-esteem as she tracks her progress.

5.	Teach her to speak up when she has an opinion, and listen to her when she does

By letting your daughter know that you value her opinion and encouraging her to speak up, you are letting her know that what she says matters—not just how she looks. The more your daughter speaks up, the more confidence she will develop in herself and her opinions.

And while you know she’s not ready for makeup or regular shampoo, you do have to admit, she’s not a baby anymore. We caught up with one mom who faced just such a dilemma and solved it by formulating her own line of natural, age appropriate hair and body products for tweens. The ingredients, scent and packaging in the Ottilie and Lulu line are all designed to be age appropriate for the tween range (the shampoo does not promise to make you sexier). As a veteran of the cosmetic industry, Ottilie & Lulu creator Deborah Hernan was able to use that background to pull together the products, but it was really her daughter who inspired her.

“When my daughter said she wasn’t a baby and didn’t want any more baby products, I looked around for products that were made for tweens/pre-teens. I was surprised there were no products specially formulated for these girls…” says Deborah.

As Deborah notes (and other moms can appreciate) the tween years are a time of great change – as puberty sets in, skin starts to take on a life of its own; becoming oily, dry or the dreaded combination. And of course there is the onset of the dreaded body odor and the fact that most tweens would rather die than let their mom help them get washed and bathed. As tweens become more responsible for their own hygiene, Deborah thinks that providing them with the right products is essential.

“Most toiletry sections for teens are dominated by color cosmetics, acne washes, face peels, heavy moisturizing creams, and pore cleansing strips that deplete skin of natural oils and contain ingredients that can be damaging to younger girls’ skin…” That’s why Ottilie & Lulu products contain anti-oxidants to protect, vitamins to nourish, and botanicals to soothe. “ The line contains antioxidants, botanicals and she says, doesn’t test on animals.

The company’s name comes from two very different girls who go to school with Deborah’s daughter and serve as inspiration – together they seem to embody all that’s great about tweens. And Deborah makes sure that real girls – just like the tweens the products are meant for – grace the cover of every bottle.
